Butterflies in Forest Hill

We have yet to start a threat on local butterfly (and moth) spotting, but fear not, this is your chance.

Seriously, there are actually some ways of area is special. Do check out this post from back in 2007: https://www.foresthillsociety.com/post/jersey-tiger-moths

I was reminded of it as I actually spotted my first Jersey Tiger Moth of 2026 just yesterday.

I also came across what I believe is a Gatekeeper butterfly in my garden

Just seeing more butterflies and moths around is a good sign of our local biodiversity, and so please do share any sightings you make too.

If this interests you, you could also join the Big Butterfly Count which starts from this Friday

I spotted this one way back on 10th February 2026. Surprisingly early for butterflies

Oooh. A Peacock Butterfly. Very nice. I have not seen one as colourful as that around here. Nice shot!

I saw a Jersey Tiger Moth a few days ago. Have had a lot of Meadow Browns - apparently the caterpillars eat grasses so I wonder if ‘no mow May’ has contributed to their increase. Also have the white butterflies and small blues.

The Jersey tiger moth was first discovered in Devonshire Road Nature Reserve around 2002. They are also believed to have bred in Garthorne Road Nature Reserve, with two variations observed: the more common orange underwing and the rarer red underwing. While they typically breed along the South Coast, they have spread throughout London and beyond.
