For me this absolutely has to be one of them.
Since moving to the area I have been obsessed with this church. From its days as an active church, to its transformation to residences.

That’s brilliant, I love it dearly too, though I am sad that the graveyard tombstones were virtually all cleared, and the only things left are not accessible to the public. I’m interested in George Baxter the printer for instance, thankfully that survives. And I know it’s hard to believe but the same architect worked on The National Portrait Gallery, which for the benefit of anyone who hadn’t already read about the church should read about him.
Quite the impressive list of accolades ![]()

I know it’s a more obvious answer, our beloved museum is also a tower visible from afar, almost like a lighthouse in a way. The Horniman Museum is beautiful and I would say comforting, because it stands for something and almost we can have a conversation with. In that sense I would call it an emotional lighthouse.
(I am developing an activity to spot such towering silhouettes in the distance which I might detail in another thread sometime)
I love to see it from several places, around Blythe Hill area and I think Torridon Road. And surprise, its architect also designed another London gallery, The Whitechapel.
Funny you should say that, as the spire of the church alwasy acted as my lighthouse when I was coming home from a trip away. Seeing it gave that sense of ease.
Great picture @Snazy .
I guess we may be biased on this side of the railway, but I too think that the spire of Christ Church is much more of a visible beacon than even the tower of the Horniman that is in fact much higher overall.
While I don’t think many would now consider it a ‘centre’ for Forest Hill any more (as it is residential), it does play an important role on the horizon, much more than the Horniman. I certainly feel I’m “home” when I see this on my walk around the area.
Here’s a collection of some of my photos from different locations in the area.
(from Beadnell Road, Forest Hill Station, Benson Road (I think), and Manor Mount)
Love a good sunset shot in Forest Hill. Especially from the drone.
From Brockley Hill Park. Dead chuffed I managed to get the Horniman and my house in the same frame
