The often discussed and much admired Pissarro picture of The Avenue, Sydenham is the first picture Paul Durand-Ruel (the famous art dealer) bought from Pissarro. It is therefore of primary importance in the chronology of the history of Impressionism.
The small house in the centre with the distinctive gable is actually 186 Kirkdale, the location of the free school, a building that is still on Kirkdale.
