Lewisham is looking healthier

Today the Forest Hill Society took part in a presentation of the latest “Healthy Streets Scorecard” for all London Boroughs, the 8th year this has been running.

The main take-away for us is that “Lewisham is improving”

These assessments look at a number of indicators, and also their outcomes, to give scores that tell us about the quality of life in each area, with emphasis on sustainable travel, lower injuries and levels of car ownership

Lewisham was mentioned a number of times amongst the most improved compared to 2025, which shows that some recent investments are starting to have an effect on the measures used to quantify how healthy our streets and lives are.

The main increases were thanks to quite a substantial effort to launch School Streets, the one area where Lewisham managed to come top of the table with almost 70% of schools being made “traffic free”. Well done Lewisham!

Overall, however, Lewisham is still mid table. The good news is that Lewisham was amongst the “most improved”, rising from 18th place to 16th

The Forest Hill Society hopes to see this improve further in 2026/2027 and is preparing a number of representations with our local councillors to find what the new Lewisham administration plans to do, and how this responds to the needs of our members and local residents. There are a number of areas to do with reducing traffic, improving local active travel services, and encouraging us to use our local shops by walking and cycling there, that we would be keen to support.

Our thanks to all councillors, past and present, and to Lewisham Council officers & staff, for working on these improvements. We look forward to rising up the table over the next few years!
