New bakery / pastry shop on the way?

That’s great - do you know if they are likely to be baking bread on site?

My understanding (from an exchange I had with them some weeks ago) is that there will not be bread baked on site at launch, but that it is in the plans for the future. I believe they are waiting for a particular oven to be installed. However, since the opening has been slightly delayed, you never know if that has been sorted

I do rather wish we’d have a new cafe opening offering something other than coffee and pastries/sandwiches.

I really really miss Aga and her wonderful soups, and salads.

I do agree. We’ve lost Aga’s but also Archie Parker that made nice sandwiches.

Hoping for more of a bakers than another cafe - let’s see!

Galao on London rd do lovely sandwiches..at least they look lovely!

I dont eat sandwiches hence missing soups and salads!:slightly_smiling_face:

Challenge for any old school baker is margins are really low for items like a white loaf or a bloomer, and days start in the wee hours of the night. You have to sell a lot of bread and usually supply other shops.

I do so miss Aga’s cheese toasties though. No other has lived up to those.

I agree those three cheese toasties were incredible.

You can see how keen Forest Hill is to have a local bakery. This thread has more views than any other.

So who’s going to make the first report?

Planning on popping in there before the Pub Walk this afternoon.

Good idea to get some ballast in, if you’re going to be stopping for refreshments on the walk.

Should have read more carefully. Closed at 2pm :frowning:

neighbours went and queued this morning (yes there was a queue!) from what I gather quite a few things had sold out they brought a croissant and coffee.

I was gutted to hear despite the name they dont sell bread just cake and coffee.

Whilst happy to have a new buisness in the hood that is’nt a nail bar or estate agent or barbers/hairdresser I’m less than excited to have another coffee shop selling cakes, croissants and pastries..

St Davids in its former incarnation used to do ‘real food’ (ie: not just cake and pastries but toast and breakfast dishes) Aga’s has gone and now Moustache on kirkdale has announced its closing in a couple of months ( and becoming an art gallery) it would be nice to have somwhere open that fills their gap.

edited to add: 3 new coffee shops on Dartmouth rd in the past 12 months..thats a lot…

and we still have St Davids tho not as good sice it became part of a chain some years ago.

so thats 4 coffee places within a 3 min walk of eachother

What chain is St David’s a part of? Ounce 10 has some good food options, in case you’ve not been there, and it has a lovely garden out the back.

Jones of Brockley I think is the name of the chain.
Small and local they have a branch on Lordship Lane (opposite corner to the save the children shop) and their original branch by Brockley station.

Ounce 10 was all sandwiches and cake from memory..(I visited when they first opened) and the sandwiches were REALLY pricey.

I have’nt been back since that first visit so it may have changed?

I don’t eat sandwiches (i know..I’m a minority) so I often end up going to Lordship Lane if I fancy treating myself to a cafe lunch (and Teaspoon is’nt too bad to be fair)

I think it’s all sandwiches, but my friend had their tuna toastie and it looked and (she said) tasted delicious. I didn’t notice what was being charged though, as I wasn’t paying.

Sad to hear The Moustache is closing as a cafe  - definitely agree that a bakery baking bread (preferably affordable) and a better selection of brunch places would be nice!

I swung by Ounce 10 today to check their menu and a ‘full sandwich’ is between £9.50 and £11.50 or you can have a half sandwich for less..

I don’t know if these are takeaway prices and if so to eat in would be even more.

I love supporting independant local buisness (I’ve NEVER stepped foot in costa since they opened!) but I do draw the line at £11 for a sandwich.

Btw the chain that StDavids is part of is Browns of Brockley not Jones of Brockley as I previously stated!
