It was exciting to see that work has FINALLY started on the dangerous junction on Woolstone Road where it is crossed by the traffic from Cranston Road and Houston Road. It has always been a difficult and potentially dangerous crossing for pedestrians and cyclists, in particular because it is so close to Kilmorie School.
However, after YEARS of campaigning by local residents, including a petition you may well have signed, and with the support of the Forest Hill Society and from local councillors, Lewisham Council has started work to improve the junction.
The plan is to narrow the road sections to slow cars and make it easier to cross. It will also include adding rain gardens to help soak up local rainfall and make the area greener. Finally, there will also be a pedestrian crossing installed just up Woolstone Road itself.
Of course, in the short term while they carry out the work, with 4-way traffic lights, this is going to be a slow junction to cross in a vehicle - so be warned!
Well done to the local residents who worked so hard on this, and thank you to Lewisham Council officers in the Public Realm team for making this happen
I stopped to look at the rain gardens last night, after a day’s rain. One had turned into a pond - I assume from rainwater run-off, rather than a burst pipe.
Plus some planting in those deep soil beds hopefully. Afraid you may be right- I think we’ll lose wooden posts quite regularly. This has been 25 years of lobbying , hope this makes the road calmer and safer for all.
Safer, pedestrians yes, shorter crossing distance. However a single formal crossing point and 4 roads to cross. I can see a lot of people just legging it but thankfully a short distance. I assume some data was gathered that that is the most regular point people cross.
Vehicles… less wiggle room for pulling out and getting it wrong. Not an excuse for poor driving, but just factual that edging out puts you immediately into the junction.
The new crossing for Woolstone Rd is finally in, and the works semi completed. Thanks to Councillor Calcutt Cheadle (@Justin_CC ) for the update and clarification that further works to resurface and re-line the road are due for Aug/Sept. Popped the drone over just to highlight the slightly odd looking lines at the location at present, especially with the junction of Houston and Woolstone. Give way… Stop or should I say OP.Zig zags or chevron. Here’s to it being properly completed
