Stag Beetle season

We always love to see them out flying - the last two nights at dusk they’ve been out in our garden, in Perry Rise. Earliest we’ve ever recorded them. Anyone else keeping an eye out?

Great picture.

Do we need a local nature section in se23.rocks? I’ve just posted about ants.

Last week I had two sightings of a slow worm in our front garden. I was wondering whether to move it to the back garden away from the road, but perhaps nature knows best.

Oh wow. I’ve seen stag beetles around this time of year in the past, but I have not seen one for several years now and I was actually thinking about posting about this in the hope that others were having more luck. That’s a beautiful female. Great photo!

I do hope others see them - and if you encounter them in the street, please help them avoid cars and unwary pedestrians!!

If you’ve ever found one in a bag of watercress, and then had it flying madly around the living room, you really don’t want to see another. Fortunately for all, it knew how to recognise an open window

You were lucky it recognised an open window. In my experience, they’re hilariously poor fliers, bumping around all over the place :slightly_smiling_face:

true- they spend 7 years as grubs eating decayed wood, then emerge as adult beetles above ground and the males spread their wings and go flying - it’s amazing they get off the ground at all!

this was a pic I took quite few years ago, lucked out in very dark conditions and caught one in flight

Three out flying in the garden tonight - the most we’ve ever seen at once.

A nature section might be useful. I’ve seen a bat over my neighbour’s garden (haven’t seen one for a few years) and swifts are back for the summer too.

I long to see a bat over my garden..my neighbours have but I always seem to miss them.

Ditto I’m sure I’ve heard an Owl hooting but never seen one but I understand someone who lives just behind my house has.

We can add a ‘nature’ tag to conversations of this type rather than create a whole new category, but it is a good idea to help find them.

I have had a bat (pipistrelle I think) over my garden for years, though I’ve not seen it this year.

I have seen the local peregrine falcon recently though, I’m quite sure.
