Would you like to join a Book Club?

Most of us live in Forest Hill and we meet in local pubs every month and take it in turns to choose, so we read lots of different books - some are hits, some are not but it’s good to try a variety of subjects.

The next meeting is at the Foresters Arms (behind Forest Hill station) at 7.30pm on Wednesday 15th April and the book will be “Seven Days in June” by Tia Williams. You will find us because we will have the books on the table. We won’t all have read it but will be chatting anyway!

Come and join us!

Thanks Helen, that’s really interesting. Can you give us an idea of the other books you’ve read recently (just as an idea of the range covered)?

We take it in turns to choose and bring 3 options that everyone votes on for the next month’s read. Some people have a theme - our choices this month were in honour of Black History Month - and others are 3 random books that the person found interesting.

Our last book was “Lolly Willowes” by Sylvia Townsend Warner and was a sort of ghost story. We all decided it was a bit odd!

Other books have been “Eurotrash” by Christian Kracht (bonkers!), “Evenings and Weekends” by Oisin McKenna (good) and “Burial Rites” by Hannah Kent. This was the one that we all agreed was gripping - though none of us would have picked it up in a bookshop, as it was set in Medieval Iceland.

We also read “Giovanni’s Room” by James Baldwin and then went to Sadlers Wells to see the dance version - it was brilliant and a great evening out.

Because the choices are all so different it is a fantastic chance to read books that we would probably never have chosen otherwise. Not all of them are good but it’s really interesting to find out!
